Justice is Blind…Literally

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and the recent exposure of the scandal that he has been involved in is definitely important news that is spreading around the globe. For someone who tried to create this public image of himself as “Mr. Morality”, yet had his secret true character revealed, he is well deserving of any and all humiliation he gets as well as his subsequent resignation. However, its just as important to note that these types of scandals are not new to US politics (see Bill Clinton) or other US community leader (see Catholic Priests). They have happened in the past, are occuring in the present, and very unfortunately will again happen in the future. What the public sees is only a very small fraction of high profile cases, which will soon be forgotten when more important news of what is going on in the life of Britney Spears is revealed, or how Congress is spending most of its time figuring out how much steriods Roger Clemons juiced up on.

What I find most interesting about the current scandal is in regards to who will replace the New York Governor. Although it is interesting to note that the Lieutenant Governor David Patterson will be the first black governor of New York when he replaces Spitzer….he will be the first BLIND governor of New York! He was visually impaired as a young child, but succesfully made his way through law school and the ranks of political system.

  1. “The worst amongst you will be your leader” <— sounds familiar?

  2. Yes it most certainly does. Here is a list of some of the signs of the Day of Judgement that have already occured:

    1. When fornication becomes widespread among your leaders (The Prophet, peace be upon him, said that this will happen when the people stop forbidding evil) (Ibn Majah)

    2. Adultery and fornication will be prevalent (The Prophet, peace be upon him, said that this has never happened without new diseases befalling the people, which their ancestors had not known.) (Bukhari, Muslim, Ibn Majah, & Al-Haythami)

    3. Adultery and fornication will be performed in the open

    4. The leader of a people will be the worst of them (at-Tirmidhi)

    5. Leaders of people will be oppressors (Al-Haythami)

    6. Children of fornication will become widespread or prevalent (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

    7. There will be people who will be brethren in public but enemies in secret (He was asked how that would come about and replied, “Because they will have ulterior motives in their mutual dealings and at the same time will fear one another.”) (at-Tirmidhi)

    8. The people of Iraq will recieve no food and no money due to oppression by the Romans (Europeans) (Muslim)

    9. Women will be naked in spite of being dressed, these women will be led astray & will lead others astray (Muslim)

    10. Years of deceit in which the truthful person will not be believed and the liar will be believed (Ahmad)

    11. Bearing false witness will become widespread (Al-Haythami & Ahmad)

    12. When men lie with men and women lie with women (Al-Haythami)

    13. Trade will become so widespread that a woman will be forced to help her husband in business (Ahmad)

    14. A woman will enter the workforce out of love for this world (Ahmad)

    15. Arrogance will increase in the earth (at-Tabarani, al-Hakim)

I’ll make another post with more of the minor and major signs insha’Allah. Thanks for the reminder.

  3. I honestly didn’t realize how common and easy it is to find cases like this

  4. hmmm.. I don’t know what to say. The thing that he did was very wrong, but on the same time he said, people should forgive and he asked forgiveness.

In Islam, when someone repents to Allah swt, his sin is forgiven, right?

On the same time, in this case, how can we know he is truly repented of what he did. I think, if he wanted to run for mayor, he should wait until his probation end. Also, it’s very emotional for the victim to see him running for mayor and acting all good.

  5. Very good point. Actually, when I read this the first thing I thought about was Omar ibn Khattab (ra). During his jahiliya he even buried his own baby daughter b/c it was the custom of his people, but he changed his life to become one of the 10 promised paradise, Khalifa of the Ummah, and someone the Prophet (pbuh) described by saying that if there were another prophet after him it would be Omar (ra).

However, in this specific case I feel it might be different. Obviously someone running for mayor, who in my opinion was convicted of attempting one of the worst possible crimes/sins a person can possibly do, would say that he should be forgiven and he is a changed man. I can’t judge him and say whether or not he is a changed man, but personally feel that most parents wouldn’t ever want someone with that kind of criminal record being in such a high position of leadership. Wallahualam bi shawab.

  6. I feel that he should at least wait until his probation end and he is not listed as a criminal if he is really sincere, and try to clean his name first, before running a high position of leadership.

Even if he doesn’t win, he still hurt the feelings of the victims and their families. He seems to take the probation like a joke.
