Masha’Allah very good lecture by Imam Siraj Wahaj. It shows us that we should ultimately be concerned about what is on the inside as opposed to what is on the outside. We live in a society that is obsessed with our image, and therefore is driving people to lack the true essence that makes us loved by Allah (swt). People spend billions and billions of dollars on cosmetics, clothes, surgeries, and so many other things visible to the eyes of others so they can impress them with their appearance. This even includes Muslims who grow beards, wear hijab, spread knowledge, and donate wealth all in the name of displaying their “righteousness”, yet don’t have the quintessential essence of God consciousness and character in their hearts. Of course we should follow the teachings of Islam, but should make sure it is instilled in our hearts and we are not simply Muslims by name and outward show. However, at the same time I am completely a supporter of looking, dressing, and acting in a beautiful manner for the right reasons.

The Prophet (saw) said, “No one will enter Paradise who has an atom’s weight of pride in his heart.” A man said, “What if a man likes his clothes to look good and his shoes to look good?” He said, “Allah is beautiful and loves beauty. Pride means denying the truth and looking down on people.” [Muslim]

Physical beauty and strength can be blessings that we can be rewarded for as long as we have the correct intentions. We should try to look beautiful and presentable whether it be for dawah, to please our spouses, or any other noteworthy reasons. Also, I am a firm believer of eating healthy and exercising daily to gain physical, mental, and spiritual strength.

The Prophet (saw) said, “A strong believer is better and is more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, while there is good in both.”
